Snake gourd coconut milk curry | pudalangai thengai paal is a side dish prepared using snake gourd, onion, tomatoes and coconut milk, spiced with red chilly powder, cumin powder, turmeric powder and garam masala powder.

Snake gourd is the common name refered to the narrow, twisted, elongated fruit. The fruit has an unpleasant odour and a slightly bitter taste, both of which disappear in cooking. This is used as a side dish for rice or chapathi.

Snake gourd Yogurt curry recipe


  • Snake gourd/ pudalangai – 1/2 kg (Chopped)
  • Onion – 2 (chopped)
  • Tomato – 2 (chopped)
ingredients – chopped snake gourd, onion and tomato
  • Coconut milk – 1 cup
Coconut milk
  • Ginger garlic paste/ inji poondu paste – 1 tsp
  • Salt – to taste
  • Red chilly powder/ milagai thool – 1/2 tsp
  • Cumin powder/ seeragathool – 1/2 tsp
  • Garam masala powder – 1/4 tsp
  • Turmeric powder/ manjal thool – 1/4 tsp

1. Heat oil in a pan, add onion and sauté for few minutes.

2. Add Ginger garlic paste and sauté.

3. Add chopped tomatoes and sauté for two more minutes till the tomatoes becomes mashy.

4. Now add chopped snake gourd and sauté till water leaves pan.

5. Add half a cup of water, close and cook till snake gourd is well cooked.

6. Add the spices powder, mix well and cook again in low flame for few minutes.

7. Add coconut milk, close with a plate and keep it in low flame until you get the desired consistency.

8. It can be little watery if needed as side dish for idli, dosa or chappathi.

  9. It can be thick if needed as side dish for rice.
