Inippu kolukattai | Sesame sweet Modak recipe will be a special dish for Ganesh chathurthi. But we can also prepare this as evening snacks on ordinary days. This is one variety of sweet kollukattai, which we prepare using rice flour and coconut filling.

Preparation Time:- 45 minutes

To Serve:- 3-4 (nearly 20 modaks)

Sesame sweet Modak recipe – Ingredients to prepare cover:-
  • Rice flour – 1 cup
  • Ghee – 1 tsp
  • Salt – pinch
  • Water – 1 cup
Ingredients for filling:-
  • Grated coconut – 1 cup
  • Grated jaggery / vellam – 1 cup
  • White sesame seeds / Vellai ellu – 1/4 cup
  • Cardomom powder – pinch

Sesame sweet Modak recipe – Method of preparation:-

1. Firstly heat 1 cup of water with 1 tea spoon of ghee and a pinch of salt in a container. Once water boils, switch off the stove. Add rice flour, mix lightly and close it with a lid. Let it rest for 5 minutes. After 5 minutes, open and stir the flour continuously without forming lumps, till the dough becomes soft. This should be done within one minute.

2. Secondly transfer to a plate at once. Greasing your hands with oil knead the dough smooth. This dough is to make the cover.

3. Further heat grated coconut, jaggery, sesame seeds and cardomom powder in a pan for few minutes. Jaggery melts and when it becomes thick, switch off the stove. Transfer to a bowl and this is used for filling the modak.

4. If you have a modak mould you can prepare it easily. Grease the mould with one drop of oil or ghee

5. Close modak mould

6. Take a lemon size ball of rice dough, and insert into the mould.

7. Make a cavity in the center with your finger, touching a drop of oil. Dough extends out at the edges. Let it be, do not remove it.

8. Fill the cavity with coconut / jaggery mixture

9. Close with the dough which came out while making the cavity

10. Open the mould and remove modak carefully

11. Prepare as much number of modaks as possible in the dough

12. Finally grease the idiyappam pan with a drop of oil, and arrange modaks above it. Cook for 10 minutes in steam

13. Remove carefully and serve. I have cut one modak to show you the inner portion.
