Semia Upma recipe | Vermicelli | சேமியா உப்புமா செய்முறை explains about the preparation of a Upma with vermicelli in easy steps. This is one of the easiest recipe for bachelors as well as for beginners, when we wish to do a breakfast Very quick.

To Serve:- 2


  • roasted semia/ vermicelli – 200 grams
  • turmeric powder/ manjal thool – 1/4 tsp
  • salt/ uppu – to taste
  • water – 400 ml

For Seasoning:-

  • Oil – 1 tsp
  • Mustard seeds/ kadugu – 1 tsp
  • Urad dal/ ulundham paruppu – 1 tsp
  • Asafoetida/ perungaayam – 1/4 tsp
  • Green chillies(slit) – 2
  • Curry leaves/ karuvepilai – few
  • Onion – 1 (chopped)
Seasoning ingredients-chopped onion, green chilly, curry leaves, mustard seeds, urad dal and asafoetida


1. Heat oil in a pan, add mustard seeds, when it splutters add urad dal and when it turns golden, add asafoetida, green chillies, curry leaves and onion and sauté till it turns pale.

2. Add water along with turmeric powder and salt. Allow it to boil.

3. When water boils, add semia and mix without breaking it. Check for salt. Add little if necessary.

4. When water is completely absorbed and semia gets cooked, switch off the stove.

Garnish with finely chopped fresh coriander leaves and Serve with idli podi or desired chutny.

Semia Upma ready to serve.
