Sathu maavu kanji recipe

Sathu maavu kanji or koozh is a very healthy breakfast. When you have sathu maavu powder at home, you can make this kanji in minutes. This breakfast keeps you full till lunch and you would not search for snacks in between. This can be prepared into a koozh with thick spoonable consistency or as kanji which will be watery with butter milk.

We can prepare both sweet and salt version as per wish.


  • sathu maavu – 1/2 cup
  • water – 1.5 cups

For Sweet version:-

  • Jaggery syrup – 2 tblsp (you can also use sugar or honey instead of jaggery)
  • Milk – 1/2 cup
  • ghee – 1 tsp
  • nuts – few

For Salt version:-

  • roasted cumin powder – a pinch
  • salt – to taste
  • butter milk – 1/2 cup


1. Mix 1/2 cup of sathu maavu in 1/2 cup of water and keep aside.












2. Heat one cup of water in a tea pan. When water boils add this sathu maavu mixed in water to it. knead well till it becomes thick. Switch off stove and cool to room temperature.































3. If you need a sweet version add jaggery syrup to it along with 1/2 cup of milk. Fry nuts in a teaspoon of ghee and add to it.









4. If you need a salt version add salt as needed along with cumin powder and butter milk. ( here I have garnished with some fried vathal)
