Raw plantain Poriyal recipe | Vaalaikkai | வாழைக்காய் பொரியல் is very easy to prepare side dish. Banana  is an edible vegetable or fruit, produced by several kinds of large herbaceous flowering plants in the genus Musa. Other names for raw plantain are ‘vaalaikkai’ in Tamil, kachcha kela in Hindi available throughout India. Unlike other Poriyals, where we fry the vegetables, in oil and cook adding enough water together, here we cook with plenty of water and salt and drain away that water. Then we do seasoning and garnishing with coconut and spices.

Raw plantain Poriyal recipe – Ingredients:-
  • raw plantain/ kachcha kela/ vaalaikkai – 2 number
  • grated coconut – 2 tblsp
Raw plantain Poriyal recipe – Ingredients for Seasoning:-
  • oil – 1 tsp
  • mustard seeds / kadugu – 1/2 tsp
  • urad dal / ulundham paruppu – 1 tsp
  • pearl onions – 2 (chopped)
  • green or red chilly – 1 number
  • curry leaves / karuvepilai – few
  • tamarind paste – 1/4 tsp
  • salt – to taste
  • grated coconut – 2 tblsp

Raw plantain Poriyal recipe – Method of preparation:-

1. Firstly remove skin of the raw plantain and chop it into small, medium or big size pieces as you wish and put it in water.

2. Secondly boil water in a container, add tamarind paste, half of the salt required and put chopped vaalaikkai in it.  It will be cooked in one or two minutes.

3. Drain water and keep the cooked plantain aside.

4. Further in another fry pan heat one tea spoon of oil, add mustard seeds and when it splutters add urad dal and when it turns golden brown, add green chillies, chopped onion and curry leaves. Sauté for two minutes till onions gets cooked.

5. Finally add cooked raw plantain and sauté for few minutes continuously  without sticking to pan.

6. Check for salt. If needed add a little. Then add grated coconut, mix well, switch off flame and transfer to bowl.

7. Serve along with rice as side dish.
