Popular halwa recipes | Poongodi’s Kitchen gives you the recipes of different varieties of halwas which are popular in South India. Halwa means “desserts” or “sweet” that are “flour based” or “nut butter based”. Halwas are also based on various vegetables such as carrots, beetroots and pumpkin. Halwas can be kept in room temperature with little risk of spoilage. However during hot summer months it is better to be refrigerated, as it can run for several months.

Mostly halwas are sweetened with sugar, jaggery or honey. The texture will be gelatinous, translucent and some crumbly. These halwas are easy to prepare at home and home made foods are always good for your health. The main ingredients for preparing halwa are ghee, sugar or jaggery, milk and nuts. I have prepared halwas using wheat flour, semolina, urad dal flour, milk, coconut, Badam, black rice, carrots, beetroots, pumpkin, bread, rava and methi seeds.

1. Thirunelveli halwa recipe 

Thirunelveli is a town in the south of Tamil Nadu and it is also called a Nellai. This traditional sweet prepared with wheat, sugar and ghee is popular in this Thirunelveli town and so it was named after that city as “Thirunelveli halwa”. One of the shop named as “iruttu kadai” in Thirunelveli  is popular in preparing this halwa. It is very simple and easy to prepare this halwa at home, if you follow the instructions carefully.

2. Milk Halwa | Paal Kova  

Paal Kova is a mouth watering, popular and traditional South Indian dessert. The best place where we get the authentic Paal Kova is “Srivilliputhur” in Tamil Nadu. The ingredients used to prepare this halwa are milk (called as Paal in tamil) and sugar. Beet root halwa is a dessert prepared with the vegetable beet root which will be dark purple in colour and rich in iron and vitamins. We use beetroots, milk, sugar and ghee for the preparation of this halwa. This is a healthy dessert that can be prepared during festivals and feasts.

4. Badam Halwa recipe

Badam halwa will always be a royal serve for the guests during festivals and feasts. This is a very simple, healthy and easy to prepare sweet even for beginners. We can remember the ingredients very easily that one cup of badam, one cup of milk, one cup of sugar and half a cup of ghee.

5. Carrot Halwa recipe

Carrot halwa is a dessert prepared with the vegetable carrot. Though carrots are available in various colours we prefer red carrots to prepare halwa as it is sweet in taste by nature. How ever this halwa can be prepared with orange carrots too. It has a lot of health benefits as they are rich in vitamins and minerals. Here the ingredients are carrots, milk, sugar and ghee.

6. Black rice halwa | chettinad kavuni arisi

Chettinad kavuni arisi | black rice halwa recipe is a ritual sweet served in Chettinad weddings. In olden days chettiar community traded all over the world. Burma is one such country where they lived and brought back a lot of things. Black rice or kavuni arisi is a popular ingredient in Burmese recipes, which came into chettiar’s households. Black rice, sugar, ghee and grated coconuts are the ingredients used here.

7. Urad dal halwa | Chettinad Aadikool

Urad dal halwa is a popular Chettinad cuisine, called as “Aadikool” or “kumayam”  in chettinad area and it is prepared using the urad dal flour. Urad dal should be lightly roasted in a dry pan till a nice flavour arise. Switch off  the stove, cool down to room temperature, and grind it in a rice mill. This flour can be stored in containers for few months and used for making this halwa. Urad dal flour, ghee and jaggery are the main ingredients in this halwa recipe.

8.Rava Kesari recipe

Rava Kesari is usually prepared as prasadham or as Neivedhyam to gods. Rava Kesari is an easy to prepare sweet which can be prepared as special dish during festivals or immediately when you get surprise guests at home. Rava/sooji,  sugar and ghee are the main ingredients.

10. Methi seeds halwa / vendhaya kali

vendhaya kali recipe a popular recipe in Tamil Nadu which will be generally prepared when a girl attains puberty or if she is pregnant. “Vendhayam” is the tamil name for fenugreek seeds or methi seeds and “kali” which means halwa. This is a very healthy halwa with vendhayam, which is a natural coolant especially during summer days.

11. Coconut halwa recipe | Thengai Burfi

coconut halwa | thengai burfi is one of the simple traditional sweet which can be prepared during festivals. This is also called as 123 cake, the name came by using 1 cup of milk, 2 cups of sugar and 3 cups of grated coconut. This is a very easy sweet for beginners. Use any nuts of your wish for garnishing.

12. Pumpkin halwa recipe

pumpkin halwa is usually prepared during festivals or during the season when pumpkins are flooded in the market. Pumpkins are rich in vitamin A, beta carotene and vitamin C and low in calories. They are a powerful source of fiber. We have prepared soups, side dishes, chutneys and now we are making halwa. Pumpkins are good for eyes, helps to reduce blood pressure and helps in weight loss. The ingredients used are pumpkin, milk and sugar. We use lesser amount of sugar as the vegetable itself is sweet in taste.

13. Semiya halwa recipe

Semiya halwa | vermicelli halwa  is an easy to prepare sweet that can be prepared during festivals like diwali,  feasts or as neivedhyam for god during poojas. Ingredients used are vermicelli, sugar, ghee, cashew nuts, dry grapes, cardomom powder and kesari powder. Here we do not use milk. This halwa is very easy to prepare and can be prepared within 15 minutes and best suitable for beginners.
